Club History

The Bellport Garden Club was founded in the summer of 1926.

The tradition of decorating the Village window boxes dates back to 1936. This program has continued each spring and Christmas.  Later the club planted a memorial walkway in honor of club member Dorothy Bushfield. The walkway is next to the former Village Hall.

The club has planted trees, with the cooperation of the Village, interested civic groups, and local citizens.  Following the devasting 1938 hurricane, 220 trees were planted.  Ever since, tree planting has been an annual program, with the club paying for the trees and the Village supplying the labor.  The club continues this commitment by replacing trees damaged by the Emerald Ash Borer disease and treating the surviving trees.

Our new initiative is to encourage conservation by establishing native and pollinator friendly gardens.
