Trees

The Bellport Garden Club has donated more than 75 trees to the Village over the past few years. It has helped save 20 Ash trees from the Emerald Ash Borer disease by paying to treat the surviving trees, at a cost of $5000 every two years. The Club was also instrumental in conserving the majestic evergreen at the North Howells traffic circle, and has worked with the Village to regain its status as a “Tree City U.S.A.”

Sustainable Gardening

The Bellport Garden Club is working with Pollinator Pathways, Suffolk Alliance for Pollinators, and the Village’s own 1000 Yards initiative to encourage gardening with plant species that are native to our area. These plants require less water, provide crucial habitat and food for birds, bees, and butterflies, and are adapted to our local soil and climate conditions. Planting this way reduces the need for fertilizer and therefore contributes to the the health of Bellport Bay.

What a beautiful, welcoming sight! The tradition of decorating the window boxes in the Village continues to this day. Every spring, the Bellport Garden Club supplies the flowers and plants the boxes, providing harmony and charm to the Village business district. The window boxes are cleaned out in the fall and redecorated with festive evergreen branches in time for the year end holidays.

Window Boxes

The Bellport Garden Club provides an annual scholarship award to one or two graduating seniors, from Bellport High School.  Students are chosen based on their academic record, character, commitment to a career in environmental sciences, and the quality of the student’s essay.  We are pleased that the students have gone onto exciting careers as ecologists, agriculture scientists, conservation specialists, and geoscientists, just to name a few!
